Adélie Penguins in Explorer Class
Learning about Adélie Penguins in the Five Acre Explorer classroom
On January 6th, 2026 we communicated with a researcher working on Ross island in Antarctica. We learned a lot about a type of penguin nesting there called the Adélie penguins. For example, they have blubber which is a thick fat layer of insulation which traps body heat. Their dark-colored backs absorb the sun's heat to stay warm. They also huddle together to survive in the cold winter. The researcher informed us that they had the white stomachs so that predators who looked up at them had a hard time telling them apart from the white sky. Overall it was an exciting and special opportunity.
