Black History, Frost & Owls

January 17, 2026

News from Cultural Arts

In Cultural Arts we are learning about Black history through art, poetry and music. We are learning music connected to the civil rights movement, a jazz standard and a song set to Langston Hughes poem Dream Keeper. For our artist we are teaming up with fiber arts and studying Bisa Butler. Bisa Butler is an incredible quilter, while we’re not quilting we are using her work as inspiration for multi-media portraits. We can’t wait to share the finished product with you all!

The Beauty of Frost

Frost is cold but it shimmers. My feet crunch with every step I take. Even though the frost is here, wisps of snow are coming. It's 32 degrees out there! FROST!

The Owl!

On hike we saw a owl! We tried to call the owl but it did not work. But we tried and we tried but it never worked.

In Fiber Arts, we often start each class with a story. Reading first thing not only sets the tone of class it helps to bring seasons, themes, or characters to life. Having the opportunity to transform what we read into a mixed media art project deepens understanding as we build skills. Students receive a different dimension to learning beyond just audio or visual senses by adding tactile sensory learning through creating art. Since art making is a tactile, and multi-sensory experience it helps expand cognitive processing and creative thinking.
