Five Acre Friday: Discovery, Learning through Blocks

Building with blocks covers many important skills that 5, 6, and 7 year olds are practicing. Constructing the structures involves an array of mathematical thinking: working with symmetry, balance, patterns, 3D shapes, and engineering/architectural elements. In addition, Block Groups are a rich opportunity for social emotional learning. Throughout the week, the children encounter moments that require teamwork, problem solving, compromise, and dealing with conflict. The kids work together and with a teacher to work out solutions to timeless problems such as "there are only 2 square blocks left but there are 3 of us" and "what do I do when my group isn't listening to my ideas?" 

During Block Presentations, the Block Group gets to share details about the parts of their structure they are most proud of, as well as tell the class what problems came up and how they solved them. Then, the class has the opportunity to ask questions and give compliments. These presentations are times when we practice listening skills and how to respond to feedback. 

The class's enthusiasm for blocks has already skyrocketed in the first three weeks of school, and we can't wait to see how this enthusiasm manifests throughout the year in the Block Area and beyond!
